Third City Christian Church

The Third City Christian Church Plaza Addition is a 9,600 sf addition to the existing worship and youth ministry facility. Both existing and new construction employ a pre-engineered building system. The Plaza serves as an intimate venue for church services, concerts, and fellowship gatherings, creating a link between the existing facility and a future worship facility. Key program amenities include a raised performing area, mezzanine, youth ministry check-in accommodations, and coffee shop. Considering the program, the challenge was apparent – how do you make a pre-engineered building more than just a metal building?

Third City Christian Church celebrates transparency and openness as a means for building community and a deeper relationship with God. The Plaza addition is a physical manifestation of this celebration. Formally, the Plaza uses simple geometry as a hierarchical expression of the community within. One of the primary goals of the project was blur the line between interior and exterior. A large glass wall allows visual transparency from exterior to interior promoting openness and vulnerability.

The Plaza uses knotty cedar siding adding a warm contrast to the primary building materials of steel and concrete. Exterior materials continue through the facade to the interior of the building reinforcing connectedness from interior to exterior. Complementing the rhythm of the wood siding, a custom designed baffle ceiling system juxtaposes wood with humble acoustical panels, providing sufficient acoustical treatment for the facility.
