Lincoln Central Library

The new Lincoln Central Library is a transformative civic project nestled within the existing SCC building in downtown Lincoln. Rather than a standalone addition, it is a thoughtful insertion that reimagines the existing structure from within. The original concrete waffle slab remains as a symbolic ceiling of memory, while the introduction of warm mass timber and a modern diagrid system brings new life to the space. This blend of old and new creates inviting, flexible spaces that foster learning, creativity, and community connection.

At the heart of the library, natural materials and light shape areas for gathering, reflection, and exploration—spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. The design carefully integrates modern technology without overwhelming the architecture, supporting a wide range of programs and community needs. Above, a rooftop pavilion and outdoor terrace extend the library’s reach into the sky—creating a civic commons for events, storytelling, and shared moments under the open air.

The project also reserves space for a future partner, emphasizing collaboration and shared public purpose. By opening up the formerly opaque structure with glass and activity, the library becomes a vibrant, transparent presence along O Street. It’s not just a building—it’s a quiet, powerful civic gesture that invites the community in and redefines what a library can be.
