Acton Academy*

Set on a six-acre site, Acton Academy Lincoln is a 14,000 sf learning environment designed to support curiosity, independence, and exploration. Unlike traditional schools, Acton’s model emphasizes discovery, self-direction, and real-world learning. The architecture responds in kind—eschewing conventional school design in favor of a flexible, exploratory campus that reflects the school’s unique pedagogy while remaining practical and cost-conscious.

The campus is composed of three buildings arranged around a central courtyard, creating a series of outdoor rooms that connect learning directly to nature. This arrangement allows the landscape to become an active part of daily life, with spaces between the buildings serving as places for gathering, transition, and exploration. The design intentionally blurs the boundary between inside and outside, encouraging students—known as Acton “heroes”—to move fluidly between studios, courtyards, and the surrounding landscape.

Throughout the campus, the architecture is shaped by the idea of discovery. Angled buildings, carved openings, and subtle misalignments obscure complete views and reveal the campus gradually as you move through it. A glimpse of a window, a shift in materials, activity in a studio, or trees emerging between buildings continually draw visitors forward. These layered moments of curiosity mirror the Acton learning experience itself—an environment where exploration, observation, and discovery are always unfolding.
