Choreographing Community: Redefining Residential Life at Northwestern College
We often think of architecture as shelter—a roof over our heads and a place to sleep.
But at its best, architecture is the choreography of daily life. At Northwestern College, a new 157-bed residence hall is proving that where students live is just as important as where they study.
The “In-Between” Magic
The real magic of this building happens in the spaces you might usually overlook. Instead of dark, isolated hallways, open stairways serve as “vertical connectors,” turning a simple walk to class into a chance for a spontaneous chat. The floor plan is intentionally “porous,” encouraging students to step out of their private rooms and into a variety of social hubs.
One student noted the impact of this layout:
“The open lounges on each floor have been great for building community and getting to interact with other people in the dorm.”
While we’ve prioritized these vibrant common areas, we know every student needs a sanctuary. The design thoughtfully provides quiet, private spaces for when students need to focus, decompress, or study, ensuring the building supports both the social and the solitary.
Neighborhoods Within a Building
To make a large facility feel like home, the design breaks the wings down into “neighborhoods.” This gives students the best of both worlds: the privacy of a tight-knit group and the energy of the broader campus.

Designed for Well-Being
Every detail is intentional, aimed at creating a space that feels sophisticated rather than “institutional.”
