Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel & Theater Renovations

Through thoughtful preservation and rehabilitation, the chapel and auditorium at Duchesne Academy were completely reimagined. Upgrading these important spaces was priority one in the multi-phased master plan.

At the heart of the school sits the iconic Duchesne Chapel. A mid-century renovation concealed Thomas Kimball’s original design details with white-washed walls and pale turquoise accents. The BVH design team underwent a thorough restoration campaign via on-site investigations and historic photograph reviews to develop an appropriate palette.

Key architectural details received new paint or gold leaf accents. The pew ends were repurposed for new extended seating. A salvaged stone relief became the centerpiece for a reliquary housed under the new dedicated altar.

The existing theater burdened attendees and performers with poor views, lighting, acoustics, and functionality. A bold intervention elevated the seating, radically upgrading the experience of the audience.

State-of-the-art lighting and sound baffles wrap the perimeter. Space in front of the stage was left open for additional seating or the addition of a thrust stage. This versatile space now functions as both a fully operational and accessible performance venue and lecture hall.
