The Sawmill Building

BVH Architecture, in collaboration with the WRK, Inc. development team, provided architectural design services for adaptive reuse of the historic Central Plains Millwork complex into a multi-tenant office/retail development  in Lincoln’s historic Haymarket District. Several existing elements from the previous lives of the industrial building were retained to create a dynamic historic/modern character to the building, including steel clad fire doors, exposed structural elements and skylights. Additionally, framing lumber from deconstructed mezzanines of the existing building were refinished and used throughout the new construction. The deep retrofit of the building envelope, inclusion of energy saving systems and creative repurposing allowed the development to garner a prestigious LEED Sliver rating by the US Green Building Council.

Tenants include WRK, Inc. corporate offices, a software development firm, Japanese restaurant, a law firm with real estate investments, the office of a Nebraska U.S. Senator, an interior design firm, and BVH Architecture. An art gallery is also incorporated in the main hall space. BVH Architecture provided complete space planning services for the entire complex, including the recommendation that space initially targeted for onsite covered parking be converted to studio space, providing a higher and best use for the space.
