Gerald W. Kirn Middle School

Kirn Middle School is currently undergoing renovations identified during a year-long facility audit. The renovations will improve safety and security by providing direct visuals of the main entry points, as well as upgrades to restrooms, smoke separation walls, exit paths and hardware. Accessibility will be improved with a more clear traffic flow, removal of existing barrier steps, and full access to all building areas. The new design also addresses building systems and energy efficiency with new and upgraded mechanical systems, plumbing systems, and electric and lighting systems.

During renovation of the original building, which will be complete in 2020, students and staff will occupy a temporary school located in a former Target store. The 90,000 sf space was completely renovated into a ‘swing space’, complete with classrooms for the more than 1,000 students, full kitchen, cafeteria, and several multi-purpose rooms.

The new Kirn Middle School design will bring improved learning environments with natural daylighting, increased classroom sizes, re-configured room layouts, a transformation of auditoriums and lecture halls into flexible learning spaces, and overall updating of interior finishes.
